It can be a challenge to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find a genuine sense of tranquillity when travelling in Japan. Nikko National Park offers beautifully rugged scenery and is less than 2 hours away from Tokyo via the Tobu Railway line. We’re now offering the option to take a trip to the park by adding an extra night on to our Japan Family Tour. Here’s our guide to some of Nikko National Park’s most picturesque spots.
Lake Chuzenji – 中禅寺湖
Located at the foot of Mount Nantai, Lake Chuzenji is mainly surrounded by undeveloped forest and is particularly beautiful in autumn when the vibrantly coloured foliage is reflected in its waters. The small hot spring town of Chuzenjiko Onsen lies on its eastern edge and is popular with Japanese tourists, especially during the summer months.
Kegon Waterfall – 華厳ノ滝
Nikko is known for its many beautiful waterfalls and the 100m drop and idyllic setting of Kegon make it the region’s most famous. There is a free observation deck for viewing the waterfall or else a paid deck, accessible via elevator.
Mt. Nantai – 男体山
There are a number of popular hiking trails to the summit of Mt. Nantai – an active volcano with Lake Chuzenji at its base. The stunning views overlooking the national park are well worth the steep 5km trek up the mountain!
Senjogahara Marshlands – 戦場ヶ原
This beautiful stretch of marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen town. The Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail is a scenic route that follows the course of the Yukawa river. Expect babbling waters, mountain views and a deep sense of inner calm.
Kirifuri Highlands, Kisuge-daira Park – 霧降高原 キスゲ平園地
North of Nikko city are the highlands of Kisuge-daira. Every year in June and July the grassland is turned bright yellow as the wild day lilies (nikko kisuge) come into bloom. You can access the highland by climbing a 1445-step staircase and on clear days the view stretches as far as Tokyo and Mt. Fuji.
