I chose to visit Japan because I’ve always been fascinated by its unique blend of traditional and modern culture. I also love Studio Ghibli and Kiki’s Delivery Service. As a magician, I was particularly drawn to the mystery and elegance of the geisha districts, the historical significance of the shrines and castles, and the vibrant and weird (in a good way) pop culture in places like Tokyo and Harajuku. I love how silly and whimsical Japanese culture can be, but also how relaxing, beautiful, respectful and different… There’s just so much there to explore! I love how many people put clothing on their dogs and walk them around in strollers (check out the picture below!).
The best experience was definitely visiting the magic bars in Tokyo. It was a blend of my passion for magic with the local culture, and the interactions there were absolutely unforgettable. I met some really amazing female magicians while I was there!
My favourite place was Kyoto, especially the geisha district. The atmosphere was so chill and the streets were beautifully steeped in tradition, making it feel like I had stepped back in time. Specifically I was in LOVE with the architecture! I also really enjoyed Hakone which was very contrasting compared to Tokyo due to its surrounding nature – it was just gorgeous! The thick forests and view of Mount Fuji were very unique! I wouldn’t have thought to go there if I hadn’t been on the group tour.
I also loved the cherry blossoms everywhere and the parks and shrines we went to where we could really see them in bloom. I took this amazing photo that looks like a screensaver almost at one of the temples…it’s so pretty with the blossoms in it. I can’t believe I took such a pretty photo – but that’s the thing! So many things in Japan are just so effortlessly pretty and beautiful it’s not hard to take a wonderful photo.
My favourite thing I learned was about the Japanese concept of “wabi-sabi,” the beauty of imperfection. Seeing it expressed in everything from the architecture to the art and even in the food was super inspiring. I know its also a bit dark but learning about Hiroshima I thought was something everyone should do and extremely important.
Yes, meeting the deer while visiting one of the sacred shrines on this magical island off of Hiroshima was a magical moment. The deer was surprisingly friendly and came right up to me as if to greet me into its home. It felt like a real-life Disney movie scene!
The best food I had was a tie between the beautifully presented flower-shaped ice cream and the black eggs of Hakone. The eggs, said to extend one’s life, were not only delicious but also left me feeling like I’d participated in a unique local tradition.
Absolutely! Embrace the local customs and try everything at least once, whether it’s the food, the onsens, or the cultural experiences. Also, always carry cash as many places don’t accept cards, and learn a few basic phrases in Japanese – it goes a long way in showing respect.
Next, I’d love to explore Egypt. I’m fascinated by ancient cultures, and the magic and mystery of the pyramids and the Nile are calling to me.
Japan is a place that feels both incredibly new and deeply familiar all at once. Every moment there felt like walking through a living museum, a pop culture paradise, and a serene landscape. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who loves a blend of history, culture, and adventure – and going with Dragon Trip made it a lot less stressful and mysterious. It was really easy to get around and fun to share with a group of fellow travellers!
