Many people become hesitant when they hear the word “hostel”. Is it safe? Is it clean? Maybe we should just stay in a hotel. Let us stop you right there. There are many different types of hostels and Asia is home to some of the best. We have spoken to a group of our Adventure Planners about their favourite hostels that we stay at during our tours. Keep reading to find out our top hostel picks.
Shared lounge, WeBase Hostel
WeBase Hostel – Kamakura, Japan:
If the World Cup has taught us anything about Japan, it’s that it is a country of full of kind-hearted, clean people. And the hostels in Japan are the same. WeBase Hostel is the top-rated hostel on our Japan tours, and our Dragons stay here during their time in Kamakura. It offers bright, spacious group dorms, family rooms, and private rooms you could expect to find in a hotel. They also have Japanese style futon rooms for those who really want to get a feel for the culture. They even offer Tokyo-Nishikawa memory foam mattresses, as well as down quilts and pillows for the perfect night’s sleep.
Evan, The Dragon Trip’s Adventure Manager says, “WeBase is close to the beach, has a great restaurant, design, staff and even a small bathhouse! Some of our travellers wish we could stay in Kamakura longer just to stay in the hostel.”
Hideaway Island, Halong Hideaway
Halong Hideaway – Halong Bay, Vietnam:
During the stay in Hanoi on our Southeast Asia tours, our Dragons take part in a two day, one night private boat tour hosted by Hanoi Central Backpackers Hostel. The tour takes you to the best and untouched parts of Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. After a jam-packed day full of activities, you are dropped off on one of the private islands (yes, you heard that right!) in the bay, where the accommodation is located.
Servet, our SE Asia Adventure Manager says, “The hostel has a private beach, great bar, pool table, beach volleyball, a free barbeque dinner… and there is a party all night long!” What more could you ask for?
If that isn’t enough to convince you, our Dragons have said that “The hideaway in Halong Bay has to be a highlight for me!” and “Halong Hideaway food was great!!” Sign us up!
Pool facility, Lub d Hostel
Lub d Hostel – Siem Reap, Cambodia:
A recent addition to our Southeast Asia group tours is Lub d Hostel where our Dragons stay during their time in Siem Reap. Servet, our SE Asia Adventure Manager calls it “the best hostel I’ve ever seen!” And we’re not surprised, it has a 5-star rating on Tripadvisor.
It is located just a few minutes’ walk away from the famous Pub Street in Siem Reap, as well as many ancient temples and Angkor Wat. The rooms are incredibly clean, the beds are extremely comfortable, and the rooms are super spacious. The hostel boasts a great outdoor swimming pool (with a swim-up bar), perfect for cooling off from the Cambodia heat – and it’s free of charge. Our Dragons have called it the perfect accommodation to end their trips and we can understand why!
Shared dorm room, The Hidden House
The Hidden House – Yangshuo, China:
The last of our top hostel picks comes from TDT’s China group tours, where our Dragons spend the night at The Hidden House in Yangshuo. The hostel is located only 200 metres away Yangshuo West Street – a popular tourist destination – but it remains very quiet at night, so your sleep won’t be interrupted by any of the hustle and bustle.
The rooms have lots of space and are very clean, and all rooms have their own private bathrooms. Some guest rooms even have patios with a view of the nearby mountains. Every floor has their own Wi-Fi connection, with built-in VPN access so you can tell your friends how great hostels are on Facebook!
Yina, TDT’s Adventure Tours Booking Manager, says “The Hidden House in Yangshuo is the best hostel! So many of our Dragons have said it is their favourite hostel they have ever been to”.
