Let’s be honest- we’ve all been dealt a pretty tough hand with the world facing an unprecedented concoction of economic challenges, health concerns and political problems. Sometimes it’s felt like a strange, dystopian social experiment. You’d be forgiven for needing a bit of tranquility and zen back in your life and for gaining a few tools to help you when the next major global scare comes around. Well- Nepal can be a kind of classroom for your mental health with a whole range of aspects of its culture which can help you face the challenges. One such opportunity comes in our 2021 Nepal trip with our monastery experience. This is where you’ll live like a monk and join their daily rituals, meals and mediations at a hillside temple. Buddhism plays an important role in Nepali culture with 10% of the population classifying themselves as Buddhist. Buddha was born in Lumbini in Nepal as well. The daily life of a monk tends to be in the same routine- with a series of prayers and memorising texts alongside simple meals and philosophy classes.
If happiness has been an issue, this year, then you’d do well to follow the so-called “happiest man in the world” who is a monk based in Tibet and has written books about his experiences. He gained the above moniker by having the strongest gamma waves in his brain recorded during a study in 2000 by the University of Wisconsin. You could follow his experiences and learn his lessons about happiness and altruism. Hopefully, spending time in the monastery will enable you to break the shackles of the last few months and gain a new-found perspective. Nepal also plays host to yoga retreats which you can choose to do on our trip too. These experiences are up in the mountains and involved a series of yoga classes, mediation and opportunities to truly unwind. It’s fair to say this is something the whole world could do with in 2021!
If you’ve spent lockdown getting fit then there’s ample opportunities to stretch your new found fitness out whilst in Nepal. The country has an incredible range of places where you can walk amidst the most striking scenery imaginable. Even a short stroll can be a photographer’s dream with sweeping panoramas providing an almost constant backdrop to life in Nepal. If you really want to challenge yourself, you could take part in a long trek after your Nepal 2021 tour- the Annapurna circuit is one of the most popular. We do an optional 3 day trek amongst the mountains which is a moderate hike but enough to give you an endorphin boost alongside the wonderful views!
In 2018, tourism contributed almost 8% to Nepal’s total GDP and provided 240 billion Nepali rupees to the economy (over 1bn GBP.) This led to the employment of over 1 million people in Nepal. As you can imagine, the impact of COVID-19- has had a devastating impact on this vital sector of the economy. It came at a time when tourism was growing in the country and Nepal was making more efforts to diversify where visitors visit. Of course, the allure of climbing Everest and other popular trekking routes are always going to be big draws but there’s so much else to see and do in this beautiful country. You can discover this on a Nepal 2021 tour and get there before these other places also become incredibly well known!
The Nepali government are desperate for tourism to return and for the jobs it creates to continue to have a positive impact on the economy. It’s hardly practising the aforementioned altruism to visit a country this stunning but there’s no doubt that your trip here will have a positive effect on the local economy and people. At The Dragon Trip, we work directly with local suppliers, employ locally and encourage our travellers to understand the communities they visit.
