A Cambodia adventure tour packs in a huge amount of variety as well as some stunning locations. It’s a popular choice of destination for many travellers and with good reason. With tropical climates, spectacular landscapes, mouth-watering cuisine and idyllic tropical beaches it makes for a perfect travel destination.
Backpacking in Asia can be a little hectic, what with the long journeys on public transport and busy schedules, it can cause you to feel fatigued at times. Luckily South East Asia offers an array of paradise islands to kick back and enjoy time to relax and recharge your batteries.
One of our favourite South East Asian islands is the stunning island of Koh Rong, the second largest island in Cambodia and just 20km off the Cambodian coast. Here you can enjoy white sandy beaches, jungle treks and remarkable wildlife.
Here at The Dragon Trip, we offer two backpacking in Asia tours that offer a 3-night stay on Koh Rong Island – our 20-day Vietnam to Cambodia group tour along with our 31-day South East Asia Tour. With so much on the island to explore – here are our top favourite activities recommended by our dragons!
1. Enjoy a night swim with the bioluminescent plankton
Take part in an incredible one-off experience and snorkel amongst hundreds of bioluminescent plankton – tiny organisms that glow when disturbed by movement.
Two of our South East Asia group tours include this as an optional activity where you’ll hop on a boat and sail to the other side of the island at sunset. Once dark, you will dive into the water and take a look at the bioluminescent plankton. From the movement you make in the water, this will cause the plankton to glow and continue to get brighter.
It’s an activity too good to miss!
2. Go for a spot of snorkelling
Snorkelling is one of the best ways to explore the wonderful marine life in the waters around the island. With lots of great variety, you can expect to see the likes of seahorses, parrotfish, diamond fish, jumping fish, needlefish, blue-spotted ribbontail rays and goatfish. And lucky for you, we know the best spot! If you head over to Lonely Beach on the northern side of the island you will discover a quiet undisturbed beach. Here, you can spend the afternoon exploring the wonders of the ocean.
The island also offers boat tours which take you to the best snorkelling spots that can’t be reached by foot. If you’re taking part in one of South East Asia group tours then you’ll get the opportunity to explore Koh Rong via boat, which will stop off a number of small bays. Here, you can spend some time snorkelling to see what you can find!

3. Perform your own beach clean up
Beach cleanups happen regularly on the island and are something that the local islanders are very passionate about. Here, at The Dragon Trip we are very passionate about sustainability and we love to help out local communities as much as we can on our trips. So, why not spend an hour of your day giving back and perform your own beach clean up.
4. Chill with a book
To really soak up Koh Rong’s tranquil setting, why not spend some alone time reading a book. With so many beaches on the island there are plenty of places to find a quiet, relaxing spot. Here are our top favourite book reading spots;
1) Lonely Beach
2) 4K Beach
3) White Beach
4) Sok San Beach
5) Plam Beach

5. Jungle trek to Long Beach
Koh Rong has plenty of great jungle trails, all of which you can explore on your own. One of the popular island trails is the trek to Long Beach, a secluded paradise beach located Southwest of the island. From the main beach, Long Beach is approximately 50 minutes by foot. To get there you will take on an adventure-filled trek through a luscious jungle. Upon your arrival at Long Beach, you can grab a bite to eat and drink at one of the local vendors and spend the rest of day lazing on the beach and catching up on your tan! A real adventure on your Cambodia adventure tour!
6. Visit Sok San Waterfall
If you’re feeling up for an adventure then why not pay a visit Sok San Waterfall. This is a great place to escape and soak up Cambodia’s stunning scenery and mountainous views. In addition, it’s set in the middle of nowhere, making it a great place to enjoy some tranquility. However, if you’re in the need for a cool off then you can crack open a cool one from the bar and take a dip in the plunge pool.
7. Enjoy some local food
There are lots of delicious inexpensive food choices on Koh Rong. The main beach offers an abundance of local run family restaurants that offer lots of freshly cooked dishes. However, our personal favourites are Kim song restaurant and Sigi’s. You can also find lots of great BBQ food along the beachfront, which is a great spot to grab a bite to eat and watch the sun go down.
8. Grab a drink at Sky Bar
You can find Sky Bar in Koh Tui Village. To get to the bar you have to climb a steep set of stairs, therefore we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. When you reach the top you will be welcomed with fantastic views of the island and the glittering ocean. Happy hour is from 6pm every evening, so it’s an ideal spot for a cocktail or two!
