This tour includes many of China’s most iconic sights and experiences and then taps into China’s rich musical tradition, giving students unique opportunities to watch and perform music throughout. Whether trying out classical Chinese instruments for the first time or playing in front of appreciative audiences, there is musical inspiration at every turn.

Itinerary

Day 1: Ancient hutongs

Arrive at Beijing Capital Airport and transfer to accommodation. Take a guided walk through one of Beijing’s ancient hutong areas. In the evening, enjoy a welcome banquet and trip briefing.

Day 2: Great Wall

Travel and hike to a secluded and incredibly beautiful section of the Great Wall, avoiding the crowds. Watch a stunning acrobatics show in the early evening.

Day 3: Imperial China

Take a tour of Tiananmen Square followed by a chance to learn about Imperial China in a visit to the Forbidden City. Then take in the view of historic Beijing from Jingshan Park. In the afternoon have a Chinese music lesson with trained musicians: learn to play instruments such as the Erhu, Pipa and Guzheng.

Day 4: Performance

Performance: Students perform a public show inside the Temple of Heaven Park, a wonderful example of Imperial Chinese design and filled with locals enjoying park life. In the afternoon, see modern China’s architectural triumph, The National Centre for the Performing Arts, famed for its underwater corridors. Night train from Beijing to Shanghai (soft sleeper).

Day 5: People's Square

Arrive in Shanghai. Transfer to accommodation. Browse gifts and local delicacies at Yu Yuan Gardens and Bazaar. Then take a guided tour of People’s Square, Nanjing Road and the Bund and learn about China’s rapid urban development.

Day 6: School Visit

Visit a Chinese school, specially matched to meet your educational interests. Students will take a school tour, join some lessons, play sports, eat lunch and participate in other activities alongside Chinese students. Visiting schools should prepare gifts and a performance for the welcome ceremony in advance. Performance: perform to the Chinese school and invited guests.

Day 7: Music Hall

Morning show from the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the Shanghai Concert Hall or Jing’an Hotel. Take a tour of Shanghai’s financial district, Lujiazui, and head to the top of the Pearl TV Tower, perhaps Shanghai’s most iconic building. Last night Karaoke Party, or KTV as it’s called in China, singing classic pop songs or newly learnt Chinese hits!

Day 8: Fly Home

Transfer to Shanghai Pudong Airport for flight home.
