Japan Premium Tour- Day 1 – Tokyo- A Room With A View

Welcome to Japan! Meet the group in the hotel and immediately be wowed by the enormous Godzilla sculpture outside the hotel- a taste of the rich variety of Japanese life to come. Enjoy a welcome dinner by taking in the city-scapes with some truly stunning views from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

Day 2 – Tokyo – Cycling and Sushi

Time to dive into a slice of local life with a bike tour through one of the city’s most charming neighbourhoods. Start the day with a delicious cup of local coffee and then our local guide will give you the lowdown on some of the customs here as we visit a Buddhist temple and observe an awe-inspiring local ceremony. There’s also time to weave your way through this lovely area and round off the trip with sake sample. That afternoon, learn the art of sushi-making with our expert chef and sample some of your produce (and your chef’s) at dinner! That night- it’s time to check out the glitz and glamour of the Roppongi Hills.

Day 3 – Tokyo – Sensational Sumos

There’s no better way to start your day than watching Sumo wrestlers go at each other. This sport is a national obsession and we’ll observe the training session before enjoying a lunch with the wrestlers. Ask them about their daily routines and see if you can eat as much as they can! One of Tokyo’s best features is the distinct local neighbourhoods and we’ll wander amidst a few of these with some time in the “electric town” of Akihabara and the quirky mayhem of Harajuku!

Day 4 – Hakone – Mountainous Majesty

It’s now time for something totally different as we head out into the mountains of Hakone! We’ll head over to the shoreline of Lake Ashi, gaze out over Mount Fuji and take in the tranquil charms of this mountain resort. That evening- we’ll relax in a ryokan- this traditional Japanese style of accomodation is a true haven in the mountains. Enjoy the delights of hot water bathing in an onsen nestled in nature.

Day 5 – Hakone – Hot Springs Serenity

Today- we’ll get right out into the mountains and do a day’s hiking in the surroundings of Hakone. Glimpse incredible views, step back in time with a cup of tea in an anicent tea house and enjoy the calm of the still surroundings! Revitalise your weary legs in the onsen before a delicious local dinner.

Day 6 – Kyoto – Ninjas and Temples

Today, we head off to discover the treasure trove of culture that is Kyoto. There’s a whole plethora of temples, charming alleys and incredible restaurants to experience. With 2,000 temples across the city- you will never be far away from a haven of serenity. First we’ll get the chance to be a Ninja with an introduction to the skills required! That evening- enjoy a slice of old-Japan with dinner at a Izakaya in Pontocho Alley. This is one of the city’s most iconic streets and it imbues a sense of excitement.

Day 7 – Kyoto – Shrines and Tea with a Geisha

Head over to Fushimi Shrine- you may recognise the collection of red torii gates from photographs. The reality is no less impressive and we’ll stroll up through the gates before reaching the hills beyond the shrines. Look back over the gates below and enjoy the tranquility of the rural splendour above! Wander around there before heading back to town. It’s then time to meet a Geisha over tea- learn about this ancient aspect of Japanese culture. From the ancient to the modern- it’s time of karaoke. It’s also all you can drink- which can affect the quality of the performances…

Day 8: Kyoto – A Slice of Zen Tranquility

Start the day with a cycling tour through the streets of Kyoto- a great way to experience the city! It’s then time for a slice of zen with a meditation class and temple tour. Learn the art of meditation and hopefully you’ll feel suitably tranquil afterwards! We’ll then visit arguably the most iconic site in all of Japan the Golden Pavillion. Marvel at the man-made beauty and then head over to the Imperial Palace. Our guide will give you a series of options to consider for your final night in this culinary paradise.

Day 9 – Kyoto/Arashiyama – River cruise to Bullet train

Cruise down the Hozugawa River with a coffee in hand as you see the sights of Kyoto from aboard ship. This traditional boat ride is a great way to experience an old slice of Japanese life. We’ll then check out the charms of Arashiyama and visit the bamboo forest and Tenryuji Temple! It’s then into Hiroshima via bullet train and you’ll be welcomed with a Okonomiyaki dinner. This traditional Japanese-style panacake is a speciality of the area and we’ll enjoy these before resting up in a luxury hotel!

Day 10 – Hiroshima/Miyajima – Sea Kayaking

Head off to Miyajima Island- this charming spot is filled with wild deer, sea views and quaint boutique shops! Not to mention some fine seafood restaurants. Work up an appetite by taking out a kayak in the ocean – make your way over to the large torii gate covered by the water. We’ll also take the ropeway for majestic island views. That evening – back to Hiroshima and check out the local night scene. This city may be synonymous with a tragic event but the vibrant centre is forward looking and filled with buzzing bars. We include a delicious local dinner of okonoyimaki tonight too!

Day 11 – Hiroshima/Osaka – Gastronomic Wonder

A sombre start to the day as we visit the Peace Memoral Museum – this is a well presented exhibition about the tragic events of 1945. It is both sad and inspiring and paints a picture of hope rising from the despair. An important part of any trip to Japan. We’ll then headover to Osaka- Japan’s second city is a maelstrom of activity and a foodie paradise. We’ll see the sights on a Dotonbori Boat Ride, do the Dragon Trip’s Arcade Challenge and then have a final group dinner after a food tour which showcases some of the varied gastronomic delights, on offer!
