China’s capital is full of historical significance, whether it’s the imperial grandeur of the Forbidden City or defining events in Tiananmen Square. This tour takes in the very best of Beijing’s history and culture, both ancient and modern.

Itinerary

Day 1: Ancient Hutongs

Arrive at Beijing Capital Airport and transfer to the accommodation. Take a guided tour through one of Beijing’s ancient hutong areas. In the evening, enjoy a welcome banquet and trip briefing.

Day 2: Great Wall

Travel to a secluded and incredibly beautiful section of the Great Wall, avoiding the crowds. Watch a stunning acrobatics show in the evening.

Day 3: Mao's China

Early rise to watch flag-raising at dawn in Tiananmen Square followed by a tour of the square and visit to see Chairman Mao’s preserved body on show in his mausoleum. Here you will understand the cult of Mao in Chinese history. Learn about imperial China during a visit to the Forbidden City then take in the view of historic Beijing from Jingshan Park. In the evening watch “To Live”, Zhang Yimou’s classic film about family life under Communist rule.

Day 4: Duck Banquet

Visit the Temple of Heaven to see classic imperial Chinese architecture and get a taste of Chinese park life. Enjoy a tea ceremony and tasting in the park. For lunch sample a delicious Peking duck meal, then shop in the Pearl Market for souvenirs. Lecture: We invite a guest speaker to speak about “The Cultural Revolution”. Followed by a student led Q and A.

Day 5: The Summer Palace

Spend the morning at the Summer Palace, walking through the grounds and boating across the lake, then barter your way through the Panjiayuan Flea Market looking for Mao’s Little Red Book and other era-defining artefacts. The final dinner is at a Mao-era themed restaurant, full of propaganda posters, communist imagery and great food.

Day 6: Fly Home

Transfer to Beijing Capital Airport for flight home.
