Travelling through southern China, this tour contrasts city and countryside and the changes taking place in both through migration and economic development. Starting in vibrant Hong Kong, students will head into mainland China and explore the rice terraces of Longji and the stunning scenery around Yangshuo before finishing in Chengdu.



Day 1: Victoria Peak

Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport and transfer to accommodation. Take the tram up Victoria Peak for stunning views over the city and harbour below. Take a coach back down and visit the Botanical Gardens and Zoo. At dusk, ride the Star Ferry across to Kowloon to explore Nathan Road and the Avenue of the Stars. Learn about population and migration as we walk around one of the world’s most densely populated cities. Finish up at the Temple Street Night Market.


Day 2: Buddhist Temple

Take the train to Guangzhou East Station Enjoy a Cantonese dim sum lunch. Visit the Buddhist Bright Filial Piety Temple and Yuexiu Park. Check-in to accommodation in Guangzhou.


Day 3: Longji Rice Terraces

Morning train from Guangzhou, then a coach transfer to Longsheng County, an ideal base to learn about Chinese agriculture. In the afternoon, visit the Longji rice terraces, in Ping’an village. Stay overnight in a simple guesthouse in the mountains.


Day 4: Cooking Class

Hike through rice paddies and see minority tribes. Hike to viewing points, “seven stars and one moon” and “nine dragons and five tigers”. Transfer to Yangshuo. In the afternoon, join a cooking class and make fantastic local dishes. Check-in to accommodation in Yangshuo.


Day 5: Moon Hill hike

Relax in mudbaths and hotsprings at the back of a 2km deep cave. Then hike to the top of Moon Hill, a famous natural landmark, and enjoy the view over Yangshuo. Continue exploring the countryside on bikes (helmets provided), stopping off at limestone peaks as we cycle alongside Yulong River. Spend the evening shopping in West Street in Yangshuo.


Day 6: Bamboo rafting

Soak up the beautiful karst scenery on bamboo rafts (fully risk-assessed and much gentler than white-water rafting). Learning activity: students research and discuss challenges facing rural China and effects of tourism on a LEDC with the group and local experts (Yangshuo is a useful case study). Enjoy the stunning Impression Sanjie Liu lightshow in the evening.


Day 7: School visit

Visit a Chinese school, specially matched to meet your educational interests. Students will take a school tour, join some lessons, play sports, eat lunch and participate in other activities alongside Chinese students. Visiting schools should prepare gifts and a performance for the welcome ceremony in advance. In the early evening see the scenic spot that is famed for being on the back of 20rmb note.


Day 8: Pandas

Fly from Guilin Airport to Chengdu Airport. In the afternoon visit Chengdu’s Panda Breeding Research Centre to see China’s national animal and learn about conservation efforts. In the evening visit a traditional teahouse to see Sichuan Opera and the famous face-changing act.


Day 9: Giant Buddha

Drive out to neighbouring city of Leshan to see the Leshan Giant Buddha – the tallest stone Buddha in the world. Take a short boat ride for the best view of the statue, which is carved out of a cliff. Try traditional Sichuan Hotpot, a fiery broth for dipping meat and vegetables.Student Fieldwork Presentations: “The Contrast Between Urban and Rural China” (or an alternative project designed by the lead teacher, pre-discussed with The Dragon Trip before travel)


Day 10: Fly home

Transfer to Chengdu Airport for flight home.
