Astonishing contrasts between ancient and modern China in this three-city tour. Start in Beijing, the epicentre of politics and culture for over a millennium, explore the historical wonders of Xi’an and finish in the bright lights and dynamism of Shanghai. For the full cultural experience, students will visit a local school, help out at an orphanage and take a Kung Fu lesson.

Day 1: Ancient hutongs

Arrive at Beijing Capital Airport and transfer to accommodation. Take a guided walk through one of Beijing’s ancient hutong areas. In the evening, enjoy a welcome banquet and trip briefing.

Day 2: Imperial China

Start the day with a calligraphy lesson. In the afternoon, learn about China’s imperial history at Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, then take in the panoramic view of historic Beijing from Jingshan Park. Visit Wangfujing Night Market in the evening to try Chinese delicacies then enjoy a Peking roast duck banquet.

Day 3: Great Wall

Travel and hike to a secluded and incredibly beautiful section of the Great Wall, avoiding the crowds. Watch a stunning acrobatics show in the early evening.

Day 4: Kung fu experience

In the morning visit the Summer Palace, walk through the grounds and then boat across the lake. Check out the Temple of Heaven to see classic imperial Chinese architecture and get a taste of Chinese park life. The afternoon finishes with a Kung Fu lesson in the park. Take a night train (soft sleeper) from Beijing West station to Xi’an Station.

Day 5: Terracotta Warriors

Train arrives in Xi’an. Drive outside the city and go deeper into China’s ancient past at the Terracotta Warriors. After the visit make your own clay warriors at a model factory. Check in to accommodation then take a tour of Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter market with all its sights and sounds. For dinner sample the unique flavours of Hui Muslim food before taking an evening stroll to see the Drum and Bell tower lit up at night.

Day 6: orphanage visit

Travel to an orphanage outside the city to interact with the children and play English learning games. Take a bike ride around the top of Xi’an’s ancient City Walls. In the evening, take a night train (soft sleeper) from Xi’an Station to Shanghai Station.

Day 7: Shanghai walking tour

arrive in Shanghai. Take a walking tour of People’s Square, Nanjing Road and The Bund and learn about China’s rapid urban development. Transfer to accommodation and check-in. In the afternoon visit AP Plaza shopping area to buy souvenirs.

Day 8: School Visit

Visit a Chinese school, specially matched to meet your educational interests. Students will take a school tour, join some lessons, play sports, eat lunch and participate in other activities alongside Chinese students. Visiting schools should prepare gifts and a performance for the welcome ceremony in advance. Finish the day with an evening river cruise for a special view of the Bund and Pudong.

Day 9: Yu Yuan Gardens

Look for gifts and local delicacies at Yu Yuan Gardens and Bazaar. For lunch try Shanghai’s famous Xiao Long Bao dumplings. Then take a tour of Shanghai’s financial district, Lujiazui, and head to the top of the Pearl TV Tower for a view of the whole city.

Day 10: Fly home

Transfer to Shanghai Pudong Airport for flight home.
