If you’re arriving to Jakarta the day before the tour starts, we can book you into pre-tour accommodation and if you have time, we recommend that you visit the 132-metre tower in Merdeka Square which provides exceptional views over the beautiful metropolis.
Day 1 – Jakarta & Bogor:
Meet your Adventure Leader at the hostel at 7am, where you’ll receive a pre-departure briefing and begin your adventure with a visit to the Cikananga Wildlife Centre.
This is a conservation project not usually open to the public which helps rehabilitate animals that are rescued from the illegal pet trade. You will have the opportunity to see orangutans, leopards and many other animals, and help the staff prepare food and activities for them, such as bamboo tubes filled with honey, which the bears love!
After a full day at the conservation centre, you will depart by private transfer to Bogor. Upon arrival, you will experience typical Indonesian home-life as you stay with a local family who will be hosting you for the night.
Day 2 – Bogor & Yogyakarta:
In the morning, embark on a nature walk led by a former animal smuggler, who has changed his life’s direction, and now focuses on animal conservation. Notice the incredible skill he has for spotting animals in the wild!
After the walk, you will enjoy a brunch provided by your homestay family, where you can enjoy authentically cooked Indonesian dishes.
Then you will be transferred to Jakarta airport, where you’ll catch a flight to Yogyakarta. When you arrive, you will head to the hostel and check in.
Before dinner, we recommend visiting the Water Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site comprised of gardens and bathing complex of the ruling family. Here, you can taste the unique ‘kopi luwak’ coffee and enjoy the surroundings.
Afterwards, you can visit a mosque for a discussion with an Imam, an Islamic preacher. Feel free to ask any questions you have about Islam, the religion practiced by 90% of Indonesia’s people. On your return to the hostel, why not join in the fun at Alun Alun Kidal Square?
Day 3 – Yogyakarta:
Today is a full-day trip to Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist Temple. This temple dates from the 8th and 9th centuries and is located in central Java. It was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. The monument was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s.
You will also get the opportunity to visit the Mendut Temple and the Prambanan & Ploasan Temples.
Day 4 – Yogyakarta:
Today you have two options:
– You can do a full day of caving, and hike to Goa Jomblang, where you’ll abseil 80m down into the mouth of the cave for fantastic photo opportunities of the sun rays shining through the roof. After, you can go tubing in smaller caves.
– If you prefer a more relaxing day, you can have some free time to explore Yogyakarta and you can take part in a Batik workshop and learn the art of wax-resist dyeing. In the afternoon, you can visit the Keraton Sultan Palace and the bustling Malioboro street.
Day 5 – Mount Bromo:
Today you’ll say goodbye to Yogyakarta and start your journey to Mount Bromo by minibus. Arriving in the afternoon, you will set up camp for the night and enjoy a relaxing dinner around a bonfire as the sun sets. Soak in the peace and quiet of your surroundings and fall asleep under the stars.
Day 6 – Mount Bromo & Mount Ijen:
Start the day bright and early at 5.30am to enjoy an unforgettable sunrise over the volcano from a nearby viewpoint. Once you’ve taken in the beauty, a four-wheel drive will take you to the ‘sea of sand’ from where you can hike up to the edge of the volcano crater for very impressive views. From this point, you will also be driven to another spectacular viewpoint to see the volcanoes.
You will then fill up on a local breakfast and head to Mount Ijen. On route, you will stop at the Madakaripura Waterfall, the biggest waterfall in East Java! Here, we will have a lunch break and relax before heading to the guesthouse near Mount Ijen.
Enjoy a free evening, explore the area and have some drinks at a local bar. If you signed up for the midnight hike, we’d definitely recommend an early night!
Day 7 – Mount Ijen & Lovina:
You have the option to join the 2-3 hour midnight trek (departing at 1.30am) to the top of Mount Ijen, where you can descend into the crater and witness the unique blue flames. This is truly a spectacular sight, where dazzling, electric-blue fire can be seen streaming down the mountain at night.
If you participate in the midnight trek, at 7am you will return to the accommodation for a well-deserved breakfast, shower and rest.
Around 11am, you will depart by minibus to Lovina Beach and arrive there mid-afternoon. Check-in, rest and why not try out the traditional Balinese cooking class? If not, you can ask your Adventure Leader what else you can do.
Day 8 – Lovina & Canggu:
This morning, we suggest getting up early to join the sunrise boat trip to see dolphins. Later, a minibus will transport you to Canggu, which is packed with incredible surfing and relaxation beaches. You’ll have the option to join a surfing class and become a master of the waves!
You will also have a Bahasa language class in the evening so bring your pen and paper! If you fancy going out and enjoying the nightlife after dinner, we recommend beach clubs. The Old Man’s Beach and Echo Beach are famous for their great atmosphere.
Day 9 – Ubud:
Off to a new destination: Ubud! Eat breakfast at the hostel before departing to Ubud, where you will arrive at around 1pm.
You will explore Ubud City with a walking tour of the area, as you explore the main streets, Kajeng Rice Fields and local villages. You will continue your tour with visits to the Monkey Forest, the Royal Palace and Goa Gajah before heading back to the centre to stroll through the markets for some delicious street food! You will also get to experience the local culture as you watch an Ubud Fire Kecek dance show.
Day 10 – Ubud:
Today is going to be a busy day! You will depart on a day trip to explore the area outside Ubud, with visits to Tukad Cepung Waterfall, a stunning natural cascade which you can swim in, and Penglipuran, which is one of the cleanest villages in the world. You will witness Bali’s daily life and explore the sense of simple living.
After, you will stop for lunch in the village of Kintamani and admire the amazing views of Lake Batur and the volcano.
The next stop is Pura Tirta Empal, a spring for holy water, and the Tegallang Rice Terrace, which is Ubud’s most famous attraction.
Day 11 – Ubud & Gili Trawangan:
Around 10am, you will have the option to transfer to Amed Beach and snorkel to see the crystal clear waters, colourful reefs and amazing marine life. Amed Beach was once best known for its traditional salt farming, but soon after its beautiful underwater trove was unveiled, with a historical shipwreck adding to its natural features, Amed Beach became a favourite among divers, particularly Jemeluk Bay.
In the afternoon, you will board a ferry to the Gili Islands and hop ashore at Gili Trawangan. The Gili Islands are a group of 3 tiny islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air – in Indonesia, near the coast of northwest Lombok Island. They are characterized by sandy beaches fringed with palm trees, and they’re known for their coral reefs just offshore. At Gili Trawangan, the largest island, a sunken ship sits at Wreck Point near Mentigi Beach. You can enjoy a night out here at the Sama Sama Reggae Bar.
Day 12 – Gili Trawangan:
Today is a free day! Have a lie in, relax on the gorgeous beaches or hire a bike to explore the island by yourself – the choice is yours.
Day 13 – Labuan Bajo:
In the morning, you will take a ferry and then a minibus to Bali airport to catch a flight to Labuan Bajo in Flores.
You will check in to the new hostel around 3pm and have a late lunch. After, you will head out to the harbour and see the local fish and vegetable markets, make sure to try out the local food! We recommend that you take change with you to stock up on any snacks and drinks you may want for the next few days.
If you’re in the mood to socialise, you can join the hostel pool party in the evening.
Day 14 – Flores Island Hopping:
After breakfast, take a quick drive to the harbour where your boat will be waiting for your island-hopping adventure! Get ready for incredible snorkelling, great viewpoints, relaxed island life, fantastic nature and unique wildlife such as the migration of Flying Foxes at sunset.
The exact route will be decided by your captain based on the weather and water currents during your trip, but your Adventure Leader will keep you up to date with any news. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner freshly cooked by your onboard team of chefs.
Day 15 – Flores Island Hopping:
Another full-day of island hopping awaits you!
You will also visit Rinca Island and Padar Island, and ultimate destinations including Pink Beach, Manta Point and Taka Makassar.
Day 16 – Flores Island Hopping & Labuan Bajo:
In the morning, you will have some more time for snorkelling near beautiful beaches before saying goodbye.
Between 1pm and 5pm you will head back to the end destination, Labuan Bajo, where you will arrive on dry land in the afternoon. Here, you will say goodbye to your fellow travellers as you come to the end of your Dragon Trip tour.
